Thursday Two Questions #41

A sharp knife or a chef's knife has long been on my wish list. Of all the things I am using every day, a sharp kitchen knife should rank pretty high on the list. It is a need and not so much a want anymore. After all, I use a knife a lot more than a watch.
I have been doing some research, read some reviews and test results on knives. It seemed to me that Global is very popular, for its stylish look and light weight. Then come some other brands that have rankings which are not as unanimous across the internet.

Yet, I can understand the reviewer and his points of why they thought highly of Kasumi, Shun, and others. These popular chef knife brands are not cheap, they run about $100.00 plus for an eight inch standard. I was thinking before I spring, I should ask you all what you use and what you might like about the knives you have. I am really hoping to buy a decent knife online that will last me at least ten years.

Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions #41
1) Are you aware, or own any of the following knife brands, Global, Kasumi, Shun, Wusthof?
2) What type of knife would you recommend to cut meat and vegetables? Hopefully it is sold online, so that I can buy it.

  1. Oh Amanda I wish I could help you here. All of my utensils are so old, I don't even remember where I bought them. I do have one knife though, that is about the size of a steak knife that I use for everything.

  2. The only one I have heard of is Wusthof but I don't own one of those.

I have ViCera and JA Henckels, they are both great knives. The ViCera has a ceramic blade, it is super sharp and I use it for everything. I highly recommend this brand, it is sold online. The Henckels are a very close second.

  4. I am so glad Judy saw your post because I remember her review on knives. I am sure you can count on her for an honest review. I do not have any expensive knives. I bought one guaranteed for life once but my teenager destroyed it in short order. He had to test it after seeing the demo. :-)

  5. I don't own the knife you've mentioned, but having a sharp knife is so essential in my kitchen. I found a cheap one at the Asian market, and it works like a dream for me so far.

  6. I have the Wüsthof Classic Ikon 7-Piece Knife Block Set. My husband bought it for me at Williams-Sonoma and it's online. I use my 5" serrated knife for a lot of things, which is sort of good multi-purpose kind of knife I find. I like the way it cuts over all. Visit Williams-Sonoma online. They have a lot of Wüsthof's knives to look at. Best of luck!

  7. I don't own any of the brand you've mentioned, but Thai had a set of Paula Dean knives, and he loves them.

I have no recommendation on knives to suggest, since I have used whatever other people gave me forever now!

  8. I have not heard of any of those brands. I have a Pampered Chef knife and a Calphalon Santoku knife(cheap, but it has worked well for me, although I will mention I only use that for cutting vegetables). I honestly use my kitchen scissors to cut my meats. It is so much faster and effective for me. It all depends on what you are using the knives for. That is great that you are reading reviews and checking everything on-line. For major product purchases, I have relied on on-line reviews, and I have not found them to fail me yet when you have a lot of people who have reviewed. I hope this helps!

  9. I'm clueless about knives and this is essential to me too. I want so badly to have a very sharp knife. I have one that works and a few others just sitting in my drawer dull as ever. I am so afraid I'll buy a dull knife.

I bought a piece of iron to sharpen one but it doesn't seem to work well at all.

So yes I want to know too.

  10. I haven't heard about those brands you mentioned but have heard about WMF and some other brands which I can't recall at the moment. I get mu knives from the big department stores as they carry a wide range. I won't buy it online as I rather test out the product.

  11. I would want the one with a ceramic blade but since I only cook occasionally I do not have a need to buy a new one.

  12. That's too funny - I've been perusing the knives online and in the store too, but haven't made any decisions on what to get yet. A sharp knife in the kitchen really does make a difference - my 'go to' is a chef's knife I got from Avon of all places - with an ergonomic handle. :)

My best friend got a set of the Kasumi for Christmas this year from her hubby, and swears by them - though I haven't checked them out yet. :) I'll be curious to see what you decide on, I might have to follow your lead! :)
