I have always peeled my banana from the tip, which is the opposite end of the stem part. The stem is the part that connects to the banana bunch. I don't think I knew that there is a better way to peel, but peeling from the tip is the easiest way for me.
Until one day I saw SO peeled his banana, can you believe that you can know someone for 12 years, and not know how he peels his banana? It never comes up in conversations, and we have never eaten a banana at the same time, or in the same room. SO peeled the banana from the stem.
Now every time I peel a banana, I wondered if I am peeling it right or wrong?
Finally, I decided to search on the internet to see what is the right way to peel a banana, since now we have a little "discrepancy". In case you don't already know, this is How to Peel a Banana:
1) Hold the banana with the tip upside.
2) Pinch the tip, and it will open up.
3) Grab the open tips and peel down.
4) Easy as pie.
Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions #85
1) Do you peel your banana?
2) Do you peel from the tip or from the stem?

I peel my banana from the stem up, and found it easier. The way we were taught to peel is a struggle for me!
ReplyDeleteHow about try to pinch the tip first then peel and see if it helps?
DeleteStem! Half the time I take it from the bunch the stem peels back anyway.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of the toilet paper question, which side do you hang the paper?
I hang the toilet paper face down so that it rolls towards me. I didn't know it could work the other way without getting caught on something?
DeleteAmanda, I could not find your Mr. Linky. I posted in my HWJ blog and as far as your banana peeling - I peel them either way and have never really given it much thought. Actually I usually cut them in half and peel them from the center as I only eat half of one at a time as a full banana gives me a stomach ache.
ReplyDeleteWell that is cheating. Lol. But at the end of the day whatever works best for you.
Deletehehe, now I know I had been peeling my banana the wrong way since I am like your SO I peel from the stem :) haha
ReplyDeleteWow, you're not the only one that peels from the stem. Unbelievable. Smiles.
DeleteThat's so funny ... I recently had this exact same conversation with people at work because someone sent me a YouTube video of someone peeling a banana from the tip. They claim this is more efficient because it's how monkeys do it. The guys I work with say that peeling from the tip is common in India, but Westerners did not know about this secret until now. Interesting. I have recently tried changing my style, and it does work, but it feels strange!

Feels strange? I guess I wouldn't know. I find it more difficult peeling it from the stem, bananas have such thick skin. Anyhow, pinching the tip makes it even easier to peel.
DeleteWho would've thought this would make such an interesting post, and yet it did. lol
ReplyDeleteYes, I always peel my banana unless it pops open at the seams from being too ripe. That's actually happened before. When I do peel my banana, I always peel down from the stem. Now, sometimes I'll cut the stem off and then peel. It depends how difficult the stem is to break. But, you know what I'm gonna try to remember to peel next time from the bottom to see if this works any better. I just never thought to do this. I guess one does these sorts of things from the way they were taught by their mother. I'm not a betting gal, but if I were I'd lay out my nickle to say my mom peels bananas from the stem, too. =D
Thanks for hosting, Amanda!
I think we can see here that Stud Muffin's comment might be true, that WEsterners peel from the stem while other ethnics peel from the tip.
DeleteI will peel the banana but not all the way. I peel it as I eat it from the stem
ReplyDeleteThat's true, I do peel as I eat it, not all at once.
DeleteI cut a little slash just below the stem. Then I bend the stem tip and then the rest all comes off in about our peealings downward.
ReplyDeleteSomeone should teach the monkeys how to do it the right way.
When I'm slicing for cereal I only have two thinner strips and one wide one. I keep the banana in the wide one and cut an "X" all the way for a long way down. Then I cut into slices and have quarter sized bite size for my cereal, just dump them in.
..
yes, who saids which is the right way? Just the way that is easiest for you. But yea, I can see your point definitely.
DeleteI've always peeled my banana as you do. And I teach my children to do it this way too. It's very much easier than doing it by the handle.
ReplyDeleteNow I can't remember how hubs peel his banana :) I'll have to ask or watch.
Come to think of it, I've never watched my children peel their bananas. I will have to make a point to see.
DeleteYikes ... the things you think of! I love it ... a very inquisitive mind. It looks as if this old gal learned something new today... I have always peeled from the stem, however, I guess the monkeys are the experts in this area... I'll try it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for following me and the nice comments. I am your newest follower! Blessings, L
Thanks Linda, well I have always been curious, and do it all, try it all kind of person. Some I've skipped because I am not good or brave enough, but as far as questions go? I go for it. LoL
DeleteGood one. I peel them from the stem too. But there's no wrong way to peel a banana as long as you get inside. Thank you for your nice comment on my blog and never stop eating bananas! Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, bananas are very good for you. And I can't stop eating bananas since it is healthy for you too.
DeleteLeave it to you, Amanda, to have a Seinfeld moment on your blog!
ReplyDeleteI peel it the "proper" way - from the tip, like you do - but I will agree, it does not always open as smoothly as it should!
Quite frankly, I never even considered peeling it backwards!
And now, I see, we already have next week's discussion laid out...
I will be coming all prepared to discuss the proper way to hang a roll of toilet paper (and by extension - paper towels) - lol!
Have a great weekend! :-)
Haha, well. I guess I like Seinfeld more than I thought. A laugh is so great for the soul. If you're referring to the hummm part of the show, I thought about that too, and laugh my A..off.
DeleteYou're the only one that gets me here. haha
I've always peeled mine from the stem. I've only seen 1 other person peel a banana like you do - and I was surprised. I didn't know you could peel it like that.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there's a wrong or right way - just the way that works for you. :-)
Yes. Now you know, not only you can peel from the tip. But pinching the tip will make it easier to peel.
DeleteWhat? I've been peeling the banana from the wrong end all my life? :-D
ReplyDeleteDon't feel bad, even though I've always peel from the tip, I've nver pinched! It is much easier to pinch!
DeleteI've never seen a banana peeled from the tip! How interesting, I'll have to try it sometime :)

Interesting! You learn something new every day. I've always peeled from the stem also.
ReplyDeleteNope, I've never done it like you! I've always done it from the stem. Who knew there was another way?
ReplyDeleteI peel it from the stem because you get a clean banana without the peelings on it ~ fun blog ~ thanks, ^_^
ReplyDeleteMy family used to buy bananas by the branch when I lived in Africa more than 50 years ago. I have seen many people from around the world and monkeys peel and eat bananas all of my life, this is the first time I've heard of peeling them from the tip rather than the stem. It never even occurred to me to do it from the other end. It's a wonderful life when we learn something new :)
ReplyDeleteAmanda, I really had to stop and think about this one. I guess I haven't eaten a banana in awhile but I'm going to add them to my grocery list. Smile!
ReplyDeleteIf I break one off from a bunch and the stem splits I peel it from there but if not I start from the tip. So I suppose my answer is whichever way is more convenient.
Sorry I missed out last week, I'll be back this Thursday.
This is my first time to hear it the other way around. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is something I have to try. ;)
ReplyDeleteI have always peeled my banana from the stem. I had no idea there was any other way! I may try to peel it from the tip this morning, though -- heh.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there's a right or wrong way. I mean, it's just a banana. As long as you get it open without somehow damaging the fruit, you're doing it right! I do peel from the stem, though.
ReplyDeleteWait, what? I never knew there was more than one way to peel a banana... :) I always peel from the stem. :)
ReplyDeleteI've never wondered about how I peel... till now. I peel from the stem too. I hate the sap on my fingers so I start with a clean knife cut. Wrong? Probably :)
