We live in the Bay Area, what is also known as Silicon Valley. Given the type of out-of-town company we have had, I think it’s fair to say they think we live in a pretty non-exciting location. It is very difficult to impress our company when they come during the winter time, because it is mostly raining. There is no snow, just rainy and cold. Many times, I actually had to find local venues on the internet that would be of interest to them.
We never really noticed, but perhaps we are deprived of exciting venues. There are few local attractions, but they are not for everyone. What pleases one group bore another to tears. We have some tourist attractions but they are mostly an hour or so away, and best to be seen in the summer time. I guess we are happy just to work here, eat here, and play elsewhere.
Silicon Valley is really about technology companies. If you want to see the Google Facebook, EBay, Intel and etc. headquarters, well you would be in the right place. Other than that, we have your typical museums, theme parks, hiking places, fabulous restaurants, gorgeous scenery, some huge malls, and FANTASTIC weather. Silicon Valley never gets too cold or too hot for long. The beach is about ½ hour away, and the snow is three or four hours away.
Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions #100
1) Do you struggle with attractions, or venues to entertain your company, in the town or area where you live?
2) What do you use to find places of entertainment, or local venues?

We do have a few tourist attractions but even I haven't seen them all and have lived here for more than 25 years. Now if you were to ask where each hibiscus tree or golden rain tree is, I might know as I am more interested in nature than man made sights. Thank goodness I am not in charge of entertainment. :-) We have the space center, a few museums, learning centers, college/university, parks, lakes...
ReplyDeleteWe have the great weather to grow fruits and plants too. That is one of our best offers.
DeleteWell, Amanda, we have a lot to see and take people to visit here in the Houston area. We have all of the major league sports, lots of colleges, the George H.W. Bush Presidential Museum, the ship channel (can actually book a free ride in one other fire inspection boat rides in their boat), the Johnson NASA Manned Space Center, Museums of all sorts (each with different types of art, natural science, childrens, printing, cars, oil, etc), antiquing in hundreds of places, indoor and outdoor malls, seafood out of of the bay plus wonderful barbeque (Houston has the most restaurants per capita of any major city in the U.S.)and all of the nationality specialty restaurants, and on and on. Oh yes, then there is Galveston a half hour away with wonderful items, including a new amusement park out over the water on peers and again eating. We had oodles of golf courses too.
ReplyDeleteI use mostly the Internet with Google the best. Sometimes we look in the newpapers or the yellow pages.
..
A group of six of us spent a week in Silicon Valley way back attending a class on a new piece of space equipment at the Lockheed facility in Sunnyvale. We enjoyed the San Fransisco area.

I have lived in Houston Texas for a short time. I do think that TX has a lot to offer as well.
DeleteKnoxville is a university town, but I wouldn't say we have a lot of exciting stuff going on right here in the city. The biggest attraction for us or visitors alike can be found just 45-mins from us in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - the most visited National Park in the country. You can NEVER run out of stuff to do, if you incorporate the mountains and surrounding towns into your agenda. Thanks for hosting, Amanda!
ReplyDeleteYes. There are lots to do, if people are willing to say yes to them.
DeleteHi Amanda, thank you one more time for handling this meme for us.
ReplyDelete1. Not really in any hurt to find stuff to entertain guest with. Houston and surrounding has a lot to offer in the tourist area. My favorites involve one of our over 54 museums(per http://www.visithoustontexas.com search), 20 golf courses, and 290 restaurants (per http://www.houstonpress.com/search/results/keyword:restaurant/near:houston/type:restaurants/#type:restaurants/keyword:restaurant%20houston/) but I know there are more.
Also I like visiting the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, the George HW Bush Museum, the Houston Ship Channel or a major sports event (we have major leagues in all).
I generally use a Google search, the newspapers, and the yellow pages to find something to take people to.
..
And my SIL keeps telling me I need to come live there.
ReplyDelete1. Not really. I rarely get visitors.
2. I just google or use friends to suggest places.
That said, I would love to visit CA again. Apparently they have Jamaican restaurants :)
I think CA is still one of the best places on earth. I also like San Jose because it is a technology area.
Delete1. we have lots of options to bring friends and relatives who are visiting, but like Judy, I prefer to show them around nature, but I learned my lesson, several times my guest complained of not feeling well or having terrible headache from hiking ( they said it is the climb that they are not used to that they ran out of air) - and this was not because I forced them to go there, but they asked me to bring there because they said they wanted to go there after seeing my pictures.
ReplyDelete2. i simply google :)
Google save the day many times for me too, from all kinds of subjects.
DeleteThere are few places that I could take my visitors to visit, such as downtown SB, or the beach, but I rarely have visitors..
ReplyDeleteI would probably use Goggle to find attraction depending on the time of their visit.
Living in San Francisco, we have much to choose from in the way of attractions and venues. There is always something for out of town visitors to see and do here.
