Catchy songs have a way of replaying in my head. Sometimes it’s just for background music, but most times it’s the lyrics. What do you think of the band One Direction? The British boy-band (and brand) has been all over the radio and on the internet. Recently, I was offered two One Direction tickets to their performance at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. I am thrilled about this opportunity and can't wait to go see the concert with Trinity.
Trinity has been singing one of their songs all around the house: What Makes You Beautiful. At first I just hummed along to the tune with her whenever I could pick up the beat. But when I started listening to the lyrics she sung more closely, the words are actually very uplifting and very positive: “Don’t need make-up, to cover-up, being the way that you are is enough.”
[Verse 1]
[Liam]
You're insecure,
Don't know what for,
You're turning heads when you walk through the door,
Don't need make-up,
To cover up,
Being the way that you are is enough,
[Bridge]
[Harry]
Everyone else in the room can see it,
Everyone else but you
[Chorus]
[All]
Baby you light up my world like nobody else,
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed,
But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell,
You don't know,
Oh oh,
You don't know you're beautiful,
If only you saw what I can see,
You'll understand why I want you so desperately,
Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe,
You don't know,
Oh oh,
You don't know you're beautiful,
Oh oh,
That's what makes you beautiful.
[Verse 2]
[Zayn]
So c-come on,
You got it wrong,
To prove I'm right,
I put it in a song,
I don't know why,
You're being shy,
And turn away when I look into your eye eye eyes,
[Bridge]
[Harry]
Everyone else in the room can see it,
Everyone else but you,
[Chorus]
[All]
Baby you light up my world like nobody else,
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed,
But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell,
You don't know,
Oh oh,
You don't know you're beautiful,
If only you saw what I can see,
You'll understand why I want you so desperately,
Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe,
You don't know,
Oh oh,
You don't know you're beautiful,
Oh oh,
That's what makes you beautiful.
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na Na Na [x2]
[Middle 8]
[Harry]
Baby you light up my world like nobody else,
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed,
But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell,
[All]
You don't know,
Oh oh,
You don't know you're beautiful,
[Chorus]
[All]
Baby you light up my world like nobody else,
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed,
But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell,
You don't know,
Oh oh,
You don't know you're beautiful ([Harry:] Oh),
If only you saw what I can see,
You'll understand why I want you so desperately ([Harry:] desperately),
Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe,
You don't know,
Oh oh,
You don't know you're beautiful,
Oh oh,
You don't know you're beautiful ([Harry:] beautiful) ,
Oh oh,
[Harry]
That's what makes you beautiful
So I thought some more about what the song was saying. Why do we feel like we need to wear make-up? Or for a more unisex perspective, why do we feel like we have to cover-up? Why do we strive to own really nice homes, really nice cars, and really nice clothes? Is it because we're insecure? I think life has a funny way of being a self-reflective mirror for people.
Too often most people get caught up with their insecurities, materialism, and the noise of everyday life. Consequently, I think it’s hard to see reality for what it really is. It’s hard to see ourselves like other people do. It is funny, but I realized that even the most confident people tend to have some sort of weakness, and if you observe closely, you will see that no one is perfect.

Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI know this song. Didn't know who sang it.
I love this song.
I should look more into their tunes.
Thanks.
Sometimes, I am amazed too the songs sung by certain groups that I didn't expect.
DeleteI couldn't agree more! Insecurities are ugly but taking ownership of who you are is, truly, what makes us beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThe worst is when you don't even realized when you ARE insecure. :-s :-s
DeleteYou know I haven't listened to music for such a long time! I can't seem to write when I listen to music because I got too emotionally involve in the lyric if the song is touching me..
ReplyDeleteOMG, that is not possible - please turn on some tunes. It will help a lot...(m)
DeleteI am a grown-up Directioner and I absolutely love that you blogged about 1D! What you pointed out about the words to this particular song is the reason I believe it is so important that they used their platform to create this powerful message not only for their young fans, but for adults like you who come across their music. I am so excited for your opportunity to see with and share the experience with your daughter because that is exactly the spirit my late mother and I shared bonding over NKOTB when I was a teenager and I will never forget the memories made with my Mom at the concert that night.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I am ready for the concert, but I know my daughter is. I will have to be very brave. :-)
DeleteGreat post! Great reminder that we are beautiful inside and we don't need to be insecure! and you're right - this song is super catchy!
ReplyDeleteBeing beautiful fortunately comes in more ways than just looks, and I am glad you like the post x-)
Deletebuwhahahahahahaa, I didn't scroll down, THAT'S why I couldn't comment before. :-b
ReplyDeleteah well, it made me laugh. :)
How lucky that you're going to go to this concert! I tried to score tickets here for my daughter when they were around over the summer, but they wanted over a hundred dollars per ticket, so we passed. She'd have loved the show though. Her and her little brother love this song too.
Yes. We will have to see. They are very popular and the crowds can be scary. I will be doing a lot of praying before I go.

DeleteI can almost hear the tune to this song while reading the words. Insecurities are so ugly sometimes, especially when people pick up on them and exploit them. I wish the world was full of people who encouraged people to embrace their differences and accept the beauty in them. Great, great lyrics.
ReplyDeleteYou make a great point Elizabeth! Even as grown-ups we often get taken advantage of and don't even realize. Thanks for your comment. (h)
DeleteMy girls are huge fans! I do like this song myself too. Good message for girls about being true to who you really are. Have fun at the concert!
ReplyDeleteI saw some of their shows when they were still in the competition. It is wonderful to see how successful they have become.
DeleteIt's human, we all compare ourselves to the girl beside us. That good, if you do it through with a health prospective. Sadly, young people don't have this kind of judgement and if they are nurtured properly then bad self-image issues mushroom.
ReplyDeleteThis is to the young girls and the girls who are grown up, but still think like a young girl....you're beautiful. When you believe it the world will, too. Confidence (not conceit) is sexy. Learn to like yourself for who you are. This One Direction song should inspire young girls to take a closer look at themselves. Thanks for sharing!
It's good to know it is normal. Thank goodness for age, because at some point we all grow out of it and understands each other.
