I Must Do Betty Draper's Up-do.
Still images were captured from the show Mad Men. Betty Draper | Francis is played by actress January Jones. In this scene, Betty Draper is meeting Don Draper for dinner in Italy.
Her hair has been up-done with a half bun on top of her head for support. She doesn't have that much hair so I would say some, or parts of her hairstyle are probably hair-pieces, extensions, or add-ons. It is quite a "look" with the O-mighty-bun and long roll across her head. I love the smooth and swept to the side heavy bang - this feature softened the contrast of the bun somewhat.
She wore the hairstyle well, not graceful - because of the costume they chose for her. I believe they were going for the sexy and seductive look rather than the soft and romantic look. Although, the lighting in this scene and the person whom she met with concoct a combination of romantic, sexy and elegant. I love it!
*Hairstyle idea for weddings, proms, romantic engagement, elegant balls, formal dinners.
As for the show, it started out a little slow with a lot of concentration on Peggy Olson. But as the episodes went on, we saw a lot more of the other characters and their personalities, such as the beauty Betty Draper here. Her character became less likable as the shows went on, but I still like that Betty has faults like real humans do, or like we all do. If you haven't seen Mad Men, give it a try when you have some time to kill.
Here are Self Sagacity's Thursday Two Questions #1701) What adjective came to mind when you see the up-do in this post? (sexy, romantic, elegant, etc…?)
2) Do you wear your hair up often?

I do not know how to do my hair, except comb it, or tie in ponytail, or sometimes, braid it. that's all. i agree with you, her looks here are more seductive than romantic
ReplyDeleteAlthough I like up-dos, my hair is so long, the weight of it gives me a headache if I wear it up for very long.
ReplyDeleteThe photo reminds me of the 60s!
Have a great week and hope to see you at Friendship Friday! :-)
Her hairstyle reminds me of the 60's girl group The Ronettes heheh!
ReplyDeleteHave a tanfastic week ;-)
So that's January Jones. My FIL is in love with her. :)
ReplyDeleteHer hairstyle reminds me of the time when women were really classy. Dressed up to the nines and all. Sadly, I don't get my hair done often. It is usually just brushed or tossed into a ponytail.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite a design in hairstyle.
ReplyDeleteI'd say artistic for the style.
I rarely wear my hair up. my hair relax my face.
Not quite sure what to think of her hair do! It looks pretty and complicated, but I don't see the sexiness or romantic side of it.
ReplyDeleteI don't wear my hair up often, only in the summer when it is really hot, in a pony tail!
The only word that comes to mind to describe Betty Draper's up-do is the 60s! Of course, even in the 70s most women were still going to the beauty parlor to get their weekly hair-do. I remember quite well my mother participating in her Saturday routine at the salon. I like a less formal hair style personally, but there are occasions for a fancy up-do as you mention. But, I don't think this would suit me.
ReplyDeleteNope, I don't wear my hair up. It's too short & fine to do anything with it other than let be natural.
We have watched all the seasons of Mad Men on Netflix and waiting for another one to pop up. I can't wait, either. I didn't think I would like the show, but as it turned out we enjoyed it very much.
I only remember wearing my hair up during my wedding. I find that her hair looks pretty fancy and doesn't look that comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI think heavy. I will put my hair up in a ponytail or maybe a french braid, but that would be it. Thanks for joining the Thumping Thursday bloghop.
ReplyDeleteI am envious of anyone with thick hair as mine is so fine. It is lovely and much too complicated for every day life.
ReplyDeleteI so wish my hair would do the fun ponytail bump that they do but no way is it in my future .. lol
