How many different kinds of crabs have you eaten? Below are five kinds of crabs that I've tried. I like the Alaskan King Crab Legs and the Dungeness Crabs the best, but sometimes I am lucky enough to find fresh Snow Crabs from Sprouts and they very delicious too.
Below are five best types of crabs and where I found them and my experiences with each one.
Alaskan King Crab Legs

They come in hampers and sometimes cooked with Cajun seasoning.
They were all that I knew back when I was single. My dinners were usually blue crabs that have been boiled and left in the freezer. I didn't like to cook when I was single, so my sister and I just have these guys for our dinners.
They were the easiest thing and they can be available in a matter of minutes, that is if you have some in the freezer ready to be devoured.

First Experience was in California
These big boys are tasty and so meaty if you can find them nice and fresh. We usually get them from Costco or at various local supermarkets like Safeway, or Lucky, and Myers.
It's hard to find them fresh and juicy, I find I am more likely find them a little dryer than I like.
I don't have a picture of my first experience, but I never let myself miss these guys too long.

Dungeness Crabs

It is more common for us to eat Dungeness crab and see them available at the stores. They can be found cooked at the large supermarkets, but if you want them still live you will have to buy them at the Asian markets. They are usually reasonable around $5.99 - $8.99 a pound. But they end up costing about the same as the Alaskan King Crabs because of their shell weight given how much crab you actually get once the shell is peeled.

Rock Crabs

These guys were the desperate measures when I can't find dungeness. They are usually cheaper per pound, but that's because they are much heavier and doesn't come with much meat. So when you consider the lower price you paid, it is mostly to pay for the hard and heavy shells.
They also don't taste that great, but they are so very good looking. They look perfect the way crabs should look.

Snow Crabs

All I can remember about why these guys even exist in my world was because I had to substitute them for my Alaskan King crab cravings. It turned out that these bad boys are just as pleasing, sometimes more so because they cost half of what Alaskan King crabs cost. The key to having good snow crab is that they are fresh and not so dried out from over cooking. Since the shell is a lot thinner than other crabs, you can easily over cook a snow crab. So remember to cook them with less time.

Crabs, any kind is good to me. In the North, we don't have much of a choice, usually blue crabs and snow crabs are plenty but the dungeness crabs are only available occasionally and very costly. If I have it my way, it would be dungeness crabs and king crabs all year.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I love a good fresh crab feast. It used to be so cheap to buy Dungeness, but I think people have caught on to the idea of eating them as dinner, so now, it's very expensive and rare.
