What Should Blog Hosting Companies Charge?

My blog is currently on Blogger, so I don't have to pay for website hosting. I like it fine as long as everything goes well. Then again, I am not sure who to call if something did go wrong. I have a long wish list when it comes to my blog functionality, but they really are wishes and not possible now with my current template. I still need to do a lot more research before I take that big leap into the full blown dream site.

So while searching for blog hosting companies the other night, I was "absorbed" by the idea of cutting expenses for Self Sagacity. Had I known about these web hosting companies, my expenses would have been half, or less than, of what I am paying now annually. The competition is fierce out there and some hosting sites charge as little as $1.99.

As I mentioned earlier I do not pay for website hosting. However, the catch is that I have to pay for my domain name. I learned today, that I could have a FREE domain name for life and 24 hours technical support for my website. There are different packages to choose from, and website hosting is becoming very affordable while offering you a wide range of services to choose from. I believe in taking baby steps towards things I don't know much about, but I often have a weakness for the vicious side, the curiosity that nags on me to go for what I really want. It is like they say wish I know then what I know now.

My question for this Thursday Two Questions are:
1) Have you ever thought about changing your blog hosting company?
2) If you did, who would you consider? If you didn't, why not?

Thanks for stopping by today. Click on the following link to view Thursday Two Questions details.

  1. So far, I'm happy with Blogger. I purchased a domain name, but haven't yet used it, since I've gone too far using my old one. I wish I could come up with a catchier header, but I was told by a graphic designer to keep it simple, not to detract from my message. I will return to your blog in the future to see if you've come up with any new ideas on this subject.

  2. I am so computer illiterate that if I left here I would be totally lost. I have had lots of friendly help me so I don't entertain the thought much.

I have a friend on Weebly and she likes it. I have a Word Press account and do nothing on it. :-) I have seen Yahoo domains for 1.99. If you do go please let us know where to find you. :-)

  3. I have gone from a website to a blog and I have linked my domain name to it. I find the blog gives you more freedom to change you look and content, as well as it being free. I guess we all have to do what is suitable for ourselves. If you need any tips for the look or apps on your blog just ask us.... cheers Fernando and Alejandro

  4. I'm okay with blogger. The only thing I worry about with free sites is what they have on offer. The sites may not have great features etc.
If I were to start up a new blog for commercial (making money) purposes I'd probably go with wordpress because they have tons of features and you are actually allowed to sell them.
Blogger is fine though. They're improving all the time.

  6. I'm happy with blogger and have had it for a while now. Even with my regular website, it's hosted on Google so I don't have domain names for either of them. I'm happy with it because I still come up in search engines without the domain. So far, so good.

  7. I am with Blogger too.. But, I did not start off with it.. I was with window live.. That was fine until I received mails from my readers that they couldn't really follow as there isn't much people using that.. It took me a long while to crossover to Bloggers.. I am fine with it so far so I doubt I am going to change it unless I received mails from readers again.. ;)

  13. For some weird reasons I thought this was a Friday meme!

    Now for the questions.

I take baby steps and learn as I go along.

I am with blogspot and I would love to change to something cleaner and more SEO friendly but don't have the money for it.

  14. So far I'm happy enough with blogger, they have made quite a few improvements since I first started. While I wouldn't mind having my own domain name I would do tons of research first.

  15. Blogger, so far, is satisfactory for me. I just don't have that much time to read everything I should in connection with all these. As it is, I spend at least twelve hours a day on the computer and that is too much. I really need to get a paying job again which will mean I must limit my blogging time.

  16. @Margaret DuarteIt is true, I would say all things work so much better when kept simple. If you look at many of the famous websites, they are all very simple names, but unique. Gone too far using your current name is a problem many of us have. It's hard to make the switch.

  17. @Judy Sheldon-WalkerIf I go, I will scream about where I am going. It is not the right time for me to invest in moving. I still have too much on my plate. I am thinking maybe when I retire. Smiles.

  18. @web-of-life.comThat is very sweet of you weboflife. You might regret offering that favor. LOL. I understand that the domain name is important in many aspects and I think it also gives you an edge in the searches since the url is shorter and simpler.

  19. @Anne Lyken-GarnerI have heard a lot of about Word Press as well. I have also seen that the website hosting is also a great way to go if you are really serious about your business. As sites like yahoo or MSN has to be so very complicated for us to manage on our own.

  20. @MumsySince most of us are bloggers, we are very accustomed to out template and what it can do. If it suits what you need it for, then I can relate definitely.

  21. @Poetic ShutterbugThis is a true comment. If you search on Google, your blogspot will come up. If you search on Yahoo or MSN, it might not come up as easily. I think it is great that Google has priority for their users, they don't have to, so I am thankful for that.

  22. @Krislin Neo, Ting (Syracuse Pike)I don't know how anyone can work on Window Live. I've tried it for a few months, with photo editing and importing to my blog. It is quirky, sometimes not recognizing me...so I am always locked out.

  23. @Deborah AnnI think there are many good deals now out there, and this website has a list of them together so you can compare. It's a great way to understand and know about your options.

  24. @wealthI think that is a great example of why someone might need a website hosting. It is for the bigger fish, and not one that is just blogging. If you need more versatility and options to create a store...you need more than Blogger.

  25. @ruthiThree years you should know. You also have so many blogs that I know you know what you're talking about. Indeed you are happy with Blogger. I believe for what you do, you also have a lot of options as far as I can see.

  26. @KalaI can see that, I think your site has a clean look that I always liked and I love that you're able to keep it that way.

  27. @JamericanSpiceCollette, it doesn't have to cost a lot of money, I think that is what the debate is here. I just hope if you do find something, that you will have the time for the move, it is the more complicated issue.

  28. @SquirrelQueenI hope Blogger continues to make more improvements, I am able to do a lot with my template. I read and learn online all the time, so it is an exciting world for me.

  29. @RNSANEYou and me both! I think I need to get a real paying job soon, or I might just loose my SO. Blogging is so time consuming and it is so not for running a family like everyone is trying to do. Blogging moms, it isn't easy. Smiles.

  30. I never used Blogger beyond a basic trial period. I kept having quirky issues as I tried to build my blog and gave up on it.

I started my blog at WordPress.com, then switched to self-hosted WordPress.org. I was pleased with the switch to a hosted site, but had some issues with the actual host (HostSo) because my files kept freezing up. At the first of this year I switched to a new host (HostGator) and changed my domain name in the process. HostGator support was very helpful and I had everything running smoothly. Now my URL matches my blog title and I love it! And my files have never frozen up on me for more than just a few minutes, so no need to contact support for help with that (so far). It has been fantastic to go 4 weeks without having to contact support! LOL!
